May Movies

For some women, Mother’s Day is more hotly anticipated than a birthday or anniversary.

It’s the one time all year you can expect some pampering and praise—you’re Queen for the day. Here are a few great flicks to inspire:

“The Queen” (2006)
Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen
PG-13

I’m not sure if I’d want to own an entire passel of Corgis, but it would be fun for a day. That, and making the kids genuflect at your appearance.

“Evita” (1996)
Madonna, Jonathan Pryce, Antonio Banderas
PG

The Queen of Pop takes her dramatic turn as Eva Peron. Say what you want about Madge—this movie is really all about Antonio.

“The King and I” (1956)
Yul Brynner, Deborah Kerr
G

Yul Brynner—rowr. It’s a musical classic, and Brynner’s signature role. And if you think it’s easy to dress the part, rumor has it that Kerr’s dresses for the shoot weighed 30 – 40 pounds each.

“The Royal Tenenbaums” (1001)
Gwyneth Paltrow, Gene Hackman, Angelica Huston
R

If dysfunctional family conflict is what makes the movie for you, then you’ll have a fine time with the Tenebaums. A superb cast and hilarious storytelling make for a great date night on the couch.

“Coming to America” (1988)
Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall
R

There’s always going to be a debate over which of Eddie Murphy’s movies from the 80s are funnier, but this one ranks somewhere close to the top. Guys—you can get your sweetheart those earrings, but I really think it’s the offer to cook dinner that sealed the deal.
