With the end of holiday distractions, dwindling daylight and chilly temps, it’s easy to feel cranky and sluggish in January.
Instead of feeling dreary, why not embrace winter? Use these three formulas to cozy up every room of your house, and appreciate how beautiful this season can be.
1. Pillows + Throw + Fireplace = Cozy Family Room
Pillows in nubby tweed, chenille, giant chunky knits and sheepskin are the ultimate in cozy. Buy three pillows: two squares—one for each end of the couch—and one rectangle in between. (Tip: The coziest pillows have down feather inserts.) Dwell Studio, both $80
This throw is made by American legend Pendleton, in a modern pattern. Dwell Studio, $175
It’s pretty amazing that you can buy a fireplace at Lowe’s these days for not much more than $200. Here’s one that doesn’t need venting—just plug it in and turn it on.
2. Layered Placemats, Runners and Tablecloths + Good Smells = Cozy Dining Room
In the dining room, try layering. Try using warm neutral tones, with vinyl-coated Chilewich placemats and runners over cotton Dansk tablecloths. Macy’s, $20
Good smells. You can layer home scents along with your tablecloths. Put Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom home candle on one end of the dining room and Fig on the other. Yum!
3. Teapot + Slippers + Fuzzy Rug = Cozy Bedroom
Tea on a bedside table while you curl up with a book? Yes, please. Here’s a teapot that comes bundled in its own cozy, the ultimate in Scandinavian chic. Vertigo Home, $90
Slippers full of sheepskin keep you feet toasty. UGG Dakota, $100
Can you overdose on sheepskin? I don’t think so. Put this fuzzy rug on the floor next to the bed and you’ll feel like you’re stepping onto a fluffy cloud each morning. Pottery Barn, $79-179
