Wrigley’s Reward
This wholesome dog treat is guaranteed to make your pooch one very happy pet. And the fresh mint and parsley help mask bad breath.
I make a batch or two several times a year using festive cookie cutters and create “doggie bags” to give away to the other pampered pets in our life. Our Yellow Labrador Wrigley prefers not to share.
Serves: 1 good dog (makes about 24 large biscuits or 48 small ones)
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 30-40 minutes
Complete the menu: Lots of love, affection and praise.
Ingredients
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 cup warm water (105-115 degrees)
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups whole-wheat flour
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups old-fashioned oats, uncooked
1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves, chopped
1 cup loosely packed fresh parsley leaves, chopped
1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
1 13-3/4 – 14-1/2 oz. can beef broth
3/4 cup milk
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a small bowl, combine yeast, sugar and warm water. Let stand until the yeast foams, about 5 minutes.
In a very large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, cornmeal, oats, mint, parsley and wheat germ. With a wooden spoon, add in the yeast mixture, broth and milk and stir until combined. Knead dough with your hands until blended, about one minute.
Divide dough in half. Cover one piece with plastic wrap to prevent drying out. Place remaining dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out, with a floured rolling pin, to 1/4-inch thickness.
With a large (about 5-inch) or small (about 2-inch) cookie cutter, such as a bone shape, cut out as many biscuits as possible, reserving trimmings.
With a spatula, transfer biscuits to a large, ungreased cookie sheet. Reroll trimmings and cut more biscuits. Repeat process with the remaining dough.
Bake small biscuits 30 minutes, large biscuits 40 minutes. Turn oven off but leave biscuits inside for one hour to dry out and harden.
After one hour, remove biscuits from the cookie sheet and place on a wire rack to cool.

Bailey’s favorite biscuits
Here’s a treat Fido is sure to flip for. Our dog Bailey, a White Shepherd/Retriever mix, would do just about anything for the taste of cheese, so this delicious biscuit always delights her.

Prep time: 25 minutes
Cook time: 35-45 minutes
Complete the menu: Lots of love, affection, praise and “good dog!”
Ingredients
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup margarine
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tbsp. sugar
1-2 tsp. chicken or beef flavored instant bouillon
1/2 cup milk
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten

In a large bowl, combine oats, margarine and boiling water. Let stand 10 minutes.
Stir in the cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg. Mix well.
Add the flour one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition, to form a stiff dough. On a floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3-4 minutes.
Roll or pat out dough to 1/2-inch thickness and make cutouts with a bone-shaped cookie cutter.
Place biscuits on greased cookie sheets 1 inch apart. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely.
