World class athletes inspired Evanston Township High School students.
The event was courtesy of Athletes Against Drugs, Stedman Graham, Make It Better, CBS Channel 2 Sportscaster Megan Mawicke, and NBC Channel 5 Commentator Art Norman.
Focus, faith, family, friends that lift you up, and hard work were common themes from the 5 world-class athletes who spoke on September 27, 2011 to ETHS students—including 100 student-athlete leaders, who were recognized by Make It Better.
Chicago Bear Matt Mayberry; Chicago-based veteran NBA players Luther Head and Bobby Simmons; Chicago’s most successful female sportscaster Megan Mawicke; and Chicago native, college All-American, and WNBA Founder Margold Clark inspired students to set goals, work hard and choose friends wisely.
Mayberry and Clark also attributed their success to faith and Simmons spoke about the important role his family played in his ability to steer clear of drugs. “I have a big family, my brothers and sisters kept me grounded and away from bad people,” Simmons said.
Athletes Against Drugs Founder and nationally known motivational speaker Stedman Graham followed with remarks that brought a standing ovation from the students.
“There are 6.5 billion people on earth, and these are some of the best of the best athletes. They are here for you today,” Graham emphasized.
Questions from the students, such as “How do you just walk away from those difficult social settings?” proved that Graham and the athletes truly connected with the students.
Channel 5’s Art Norman moderated the morning with an infectious enthusiasm.
The event not only inspired students, it also resonated with adults who participated as sponsors. “I would rather do this than a black tie gala any day. You walk away and you know you made a difference in kids’ lives,” explained Kathleen Scovel of the KAS Group.
In honor of the event, the ETHS administration also recognized the following 100 sophomore, junior and senior student-athlete leaders as Make It Better Student Athlete Leaders for significant accomplishments in the classroom, on their playing fields and in the community.
