The phrase “Mind the Gap” was first introduced in London in 1969 to warn rail passengers about the gap between the train door and the station platform.
This motto is readily applicable to possibly the most competitive of businesses—the entertainment industry. Parents wanting their kids to enter the business need to mind the gap between their child’s abilities and dreams and the industry’s expectations.
Keep in mind that acting is both a profession and an art. Ninety-two percent of actors are out of work at any given time, with the same eight percent working continuously. About 10 percent of an agent’s client list generates 90 percent of the agency’s income. It is a business where the supply far outstrips the demand; jobs have been won and lost on how an actor walks into the audition room. So, how does one, in such a competitive and subjective market, set oneself apart?
Mind the gap—the gap between the art and the profession. The Actors Training Center strives to bridge the gap by not only focusing on skill-based training but also concentrating on “how to” navigate a field that is overcrowded with dreams and high hopes. How-tos include: How to write a proper resume. What does a proper headshot look like? What are proper manners at an audition? What is the best way to communicate with talent agents? The list goes on and on.
We constantly hear from Chicago talent agents that ATC students come to them with a special know-how and ease. AJ Links, Casting Associate at Paskal Rudnicke Casting says, “ATC kids have a special brand of confidence; they are unique and prepared.” That ease and confidence comes from having business acumen in addition to talent and skill. This combination is a critical element for success.
So, mind the gap—or at least, let us do it for you.
