Emerald City Theatre’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” offers an updated twist on the classic Roald Dahl story.
Greedy Augustus Gloop has been transformed into a 21st century “jock” who believes chocolate is good for his muscles, while bratty Veruca Salt is never far from her cell phone. The Oompa Loompas appear as puppets, expertly designed by set designer Kevin J. Beltz. Like the original story, the Oompa Loompas act as a “Greek chorus” as they sing about the demise of Augustus, Veruca, Mike Teavee (who is now obsessed with video games) and gum-loving Violet Beauregard.
Emerald City Theatre is dedicated to extending the theatre experience for its young audience by offering a number of perks including a free, pre-show craft activity, a children’s playbill filled with Wonka-themed games and a post-show “meet and greet” where characters graciously pose for pictures and sign autographs.
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” runs through July 21 at the Emerald City Theatre at the Apollo Theater in Chicago. For information about tickets and show times click here.
