It’s never too early to get kids involved in taking care of our planet. As Earth Day celebrates 46 years of promoting discussion of environmental issues and ideas on April 22, you can celebrate as a family with these events around Chicago.
Earth Day at Kohl Children’s Museum
April 22
Nature Cat will be on hand for pictures at Kohl Children’s Museum from 1-4 p.m. on Earth Day. Then enjoy activities that celebrate all the beauty the great outdoors has to offer.
Earth Day Clean Up at Kelly
April 22
Roll up your sleeves and join the Chicago Park District in cleaning Kelly Park from noon to 3 p.m. This event is open to all ages and snacks and tools will be provided. Similar events will be held on April 23 at Gompers Park, Skinner Park, Touhy-Herbert Park (ages 2 and up), Union Park (ages 7 and up) and Vittum Park.
Earthfest at Adler Planetarium
April 22-24
Families can celebrate Earth with Adler all weekend long. Stop by the Sensing Earth Sensory Station, read “Curious George Plants a Tree,” plant native plants and more. Some of the trees surrounding Adler will also be marked as part of Morton Arboretum’s 5th Annual Tree Tagging Campaign to show the many benefits trees provide here in the city.
Clean Up, Evanston!
April 23
From 9-11 a.m., families, groups and individuals can clean up designated areas throughout Evanston during this annual event. All ages are welcome. Sign up to volunteer here.
Earth Day Walk at Chicago Botanic Garden
April 23
This 45-60 minute guided walk through McDonald Woods is open to all ages and begins at 1 p.m. Visitors will learn about the wildflowers that are beginning to bloom and the Garden’s restoration work.
Party for the Planet at Brookfield Zoo
April 24
Bring your old phones, laptops, bikes, sports equipment and more to be recycled at Brookfield Zoo and stay for the Eco Expo with more than 40 Earth-friendly vendors, tree planting, live music and more. Find a complete schedule of events here.
