5 Things to Do: January 10 – 12

Take a break from shoveling this weekend.

Bring your children over the age of six to Heller Nature Center to view the moon, constellations and Jupiter through telescopes. Pre-registration is not required, but call ahead because the event will be canceled if cloudy.

Evanston

Pick-Staiger Concert Hall will welcome the best of the best in music through January 26. Performers include the Miro Quartet with guest pianist Shai Wosner, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet and the Lincoln String Quartet. And mark your calendars: cellist Marc Johnson will teach a free Chamber Music Master Class Saturday, Jan. 25.

Kids Author Extravaganza

Help your kids find a book to curl up with at Highland Park Public Library. Multiple authors, including Josh Schneider and T.M. Goeglein, will be available to sign books. Your child just might find their new favorite read.

Winter Carnival

Bundle up and head out to Meadowhill Park for dog sled and ice-sculpting demonstrations, horse-drawn carriage rides, a bonfire and s’mores, snowshoe obstacle course and more. There will even be a decorated sled contest at this award-winning carnival, so start decorating today!

Second Sunday at the Hyde Park Art Center

The second Sunday of every month is all about families at the Hyde Park Art Center. This weekend, join artist Assef Evron and make cyanotypes, a photographic craft perfect for kids age 3 and up. Artist Mary Tepper will also be on hand to help make finger puppets.
