Many beauty trends that pop up in magazines look fabulous but can seem too complicated to replicate.
Here are the simplest ways to recreate these looks on your own.
How to create the perfect cat eye or winged liner:
According to Josie Volpentesta, makeup artist and beauty consultant for Makeup by Josie, there are just three steps to create a flawless cat-eye.
- Press gel eyeliner along the upper lash line. (Try Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner.)
- Create a wing by extending the liner past the outer corner of your eye, following the upward curve of your eye.
- Fill in the corner of your “wing,” creating a smooth line.
How to create perfect lashes:
There’s nothing worse than clumpy, goopy lashes, especially when it’s easy to create long, lovely ones in seconds.
- Curl lashes starting at the base and work your way outward, about three pulses from roots to tips. (Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler truly is the best.)
- Take your mascara and twist the wand slightly as you pull it out of the tube. Do not pump your mascara; it just puts more air into the tube. Holding the wand horizontally, wiggle it back and forth on the lashes as you bring the wand upward from bottom of lashes to ends. You will have to repeat this step a few times as you work your way along your lashes.
- Let the first coat of mascara dry, then add a second coat.

How to make eyes appear bigger:
Not everyone has eyes like Zooey Deschanel, but there are still ways to make eyes pop.
- Use white eyeliner to line the bottom inner rims of your eyes. Sephora makes a fantastic one that’s inexpensive.
- Take a highlighter or light colored shimmer eye shadow and press it onto the inner corners of your eyes, just next to your tear ducts. Take that same highlighter and dab it onto your eye just below your brow, from the center to the outside.
- Bobbi Brown makeup artist Robyn Gould recommends “wearing a lighter or brighter shimmer shadow on the lid and a soft matte color in the crease to add depth.”
- Finally, use a touch of the highlighter on the outer corners of your eyes. A drop of Visine in each eye will also make the whites of your eyes brighter.
How to make lips appear fuller and keep lipstick in place:
There are a few ways to make lips look luscious.
- Apply a lip plumper like Dior Addict Lip Maximizer, a product that’s revered by beauty professionals and won’t give the uncomfortable tingly sensation that other plumpers have. Volpentesta recommends applying the plumper about 15 minutes before you do your makeup. Then, pat with a tissue.
- Take a lip pencil that is the same shade as your lipstick and trace around the edges of your lips. Then, fill in your lips with the pencil. This will create a base.
- Apply the lipstick as you usually would. Take a clear gloss or plumper and dab it onto the center of your bottom lip.
- Finally, take one of your fingers and put your lips around it, then pull your finger out. Any excess lipstick that would have gone onto your teeth will come off on your finger.
