Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 at Writers Theatre

This innovative musical took Broadway by storm with its “electropop opera” score, receiving two Tony Awards and 12 nominations. Katie Spelman and Matt Deitchman, the inspired creative team behind WT’s hit production of Once, reunite to bring this modern spin on a literary classic to Chicago for the first time — running through October 27. Sonny Acres Farm is proud to announce the return of their Fall Festival, open to the public beginning September 14th through October 30th. 7th Chicago International Latino Theater Festival returns to Chicago again this year as the citywide festival showcasing local, national and international Latino theater artists and companies. The fest has an impressive run that lasts until November 17, so you’ve got plenty of time to join in the celebration this month. The festival lineup includes various productions that are new to the city and remains a “cultural high point of Chicago’s Latino Heritage Month.” Find more details on the Chicago International Latino Theater Festival site.

Chicago Humanities Fall Festival

Through a stellar lineup of artists, creatives, innovators and more, the Chicago Humanities Fall Festival “connects people to the ideas that shape and define us.” By bringing in a lineup of speakers who are “leading figures from across disciplines and professions” the fest takes audiences beyond the surface level. The festival runs from now through November, which means all October long you can enjoy the curated acts they have in store, such as: Connie Chung, Anna Marie Tendler, John Green, and more. Jack’s Pumpkin Patch Pop-Up

For many Chicagoans, fall means sweet treats and autumn-colored photo-ops. And luckily for us, Jack’s Pumpkin Patch Pop-Up is the annual opportunity to do all of that and more. On Goose Island, the seasonal festivities go from now until early November. Here, Jack’s opens its doors to millennials looking for fun, parents seeking a family night out and anyone else who loves this season. Movies at the Parks

The beautiful Chicago Parks system is in full use this summer with a number of outdoor events all over the city. But none bring in a more steady crowd than the Movies in the Parks series, a part of the city’s larger Night Out in the Parks initiative. Enjoy family-friendly movies that range from newer releases to kid favorites, all while reclining on the lawn of your local park — now through October 30. Through October 27, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry wants to welcome guests to the first-ever “official exhibition to focus on the science and technology behind the world’s longest-running movie franchise” — 007 Science: Inventing the World of James Bond. Chicago Haunted River Tour

October 1-6: Catch The Great Wave at the Art Institute

If not the most famous artwork in the world, it is certainly one of the most recognizable. The Great Wave, created by legendary Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai nearly 200 years ago, has inspired countless artists across decades. The work will be on view until January 6.

October 5: Chicago Beer Fest

A cold beer is nice, but what might make it even better is having that beer in the middle of one of Chicago’s favorite museums. This month, head over to the Field Museum where they are hosting the Chicago Beer Festival — a sampling event with tons of breweries who have brought out their best fall seasonal brews. Returning for a delicious 37th year, the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest always marks the beginning of the fall harvest season. October 16-20 & 23-27: Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns

From frightening to friendly to down right fascinating, the Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns returns to the Chicago Botanic Garden this fall to enthrall guests who weave through the outdoor exhibit. As you make your way through the grounds, take in the endless rows of artistically carved pumpkins, all while costumed entertainers walk among the grounds and a live pumpkin carving takes place. Guests come from near and far each year to take in the splendor, and you can be one of them by checking out tickets and logistics on the Chicago Botanic Garden site.

October 16-27: The 60th Chicago International Film Festival

Returning for an outstanding 60th year, the Chicago International Film Festival promises a film lineup that is as entertaining as ever. This year, as always, the schedule includes films from around the world and from varying perspectives — all of which evoke thought and passion from both filmmakers and audiences. As is tradition with the CIFF, the screenings will take place at different venues across the city; this year from October 16-27. Welcome the 10th Annual Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade — which is held from 6-8pm on State Street in the Loop. October 19: Rosehill Cemetery ‘Crypt’ 5K Run/Walk

Head up north to Rosehill Cemetery where you’re in for a ghoulishly-fun time at their annual “Crypt” 5K Run/Walk. All glow stick-covered athletes will make their way through the candle lit course in order to reach the finish line, once there, you’ll be treated to an after party with some complimentary drinks. October 19-20: Open House Chicago

Many of Chicago’s greatest wonders are its architectural gems. Annually, the Chicago Architecture Center holds their Open House Chicago series, which features well over 100 sites across 22 neighborhoods — and this year is no exception to the fun. October 26-27: Meditations | Chicago Master Singers

Looking for an hour-long escape from the increasingly loud and busy world and for an opportunity to breathe in beauty? Experience Chicago Master Singers’ Fall Concert, “Meditations.” The program invites us to “clear the chaos … be at peace” and explore faith, joy, and comfort. Featuring Martin’s Mass for Double Choir.

October 27: The Elements with Music of the Baroque

Music of the Baroque’s season continues as Laurence Cummings, music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, explores nature’s building blocks — earth, air, fire, and water. Cummings will narrate Rebel’s shockingly imaginative ballet Les Elémens alongside Rameau’s Suite from Naïs, Telemann’s “Ebb and Flow,” and Vivaldi’s “Autumn” from The Four Seasons.
