A new year brings new theater, but it also brings annual winter favorites. Here are five things to do around Chicago this weekend.
“Botanic Garden”
“Botanic Garden,” a play written by local author Todd Logan about a widow going on her first date since her husband died (who is also the only one who can help her get through it), opens at Citadel Theatre this week. The show runs through Jan. 17.
Winter Chamber Music Festival

Begins Jan. 8
Evanston
The 20th season of Northwestern’s Winter Chamber Music Festival features the Lincoln String Quartet (comprised of Chicago Symphony Orchestra members), the Jupiter Quartet, the Grammy-nominated chamber orchestra A Far Cry, and more musical guests through Feb. 7.
Winter Fest
Enjoy winter activities everyone in the family will love for free! Inside, find ice skating and open gymnastics time, or go outside for carriage rides and snowshoeing.
Ice Carving Competition

Jan. 9
Rosemont
Watch as award-winning ice carvers sculpt icy creations before voting for your favorite.
Snow Much Fun

Closes Jan. 10
Chicago
Visit Chicago Children’s Museum’s Snow Much Fun, where you’ll find a rink “designed for sock-footed skaters” and snowball fights with fluff. It’s winter fun without getting cold!
Looking Ahead
- Linda Rossetti, author of “Women & Transition: Reinventing Work and Life,” will speak at New Trier’s Winnetka Campus on Tuesday, Jan. 12 during a Family Action Network event. The talk is free and open to the public and suitable for those ages 12 and older.
