Outdoor Movies

One of our favorite places to watch a movie at dusk is Northwestern University’s Block Cinema, part of the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art.

This summer, they’re featuring classics set in Chicago (think The Breakfast Club, Blues Brothers and Breaking Away) along with the biggest hits of the past year. Avatar under the stars, anyone?

Get there at around 8 p.m., and bring your lawn chairs and blanket. Stake out your place, and enjoy a picnic. Or, before it gets dark, take a stroll around Arts Circle, where more than a dozen pieces of sculpture dot the landscape.

Pieces by Henry Moore, Joan Miro, Jean Arp and Barbara Hepworth are among the highlights. A sculpture map is available at the art museum, adjacent to Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, or you can download the map from Northwestern’s website here.

Here’s a full listing of Block Cinema’s summer movies.
