Women make up nearly 75 percent of the nonprofit workforce — yet fewer than 42 percent of nonprofit boards are chaired by women, and only 22 percent of the sector’s largest organizations are led by women. This persistent gender gap, often fueled by entrenched biases and a “glass escalator” effect that propels men faster into leadership, makes the work of women’s boards especially vital.
Across the country, these boards quietly shape the future of some of the most powerful cultural, educational, and healthcare institutions. They raise millions annually, open doors for women leaders, and model the collaborative, community-centered leadership that the sector needs to thrive. The following 21 women’s boards stand out as some of the most prestigious and influential women’s boards in the nation.
