A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ classic holiday tale, “A Christmas Carol,” is alive on the stage again this winter at the Goodman Theatre. The show will run at the Loop-based theater all throughout the month of December. Audiences can grab their tickets now by visiting the Goodman Theatre website.

Macy’s Holiday Celebrations

If you love the holidays in Chicago, chances are you’ve been waiting all year for the Macy’s Holiday Window Display in all its good cheer — running until New Year’s Day. The classic State Street store also welcomes parents and kids alike to pop in for Macy’s 2023 Santaland, where kids can visit and take a photo with Santa. Reservations are required and should be made at least five days in advance, but not to worry, Santa and his elves will be around until Dec. 24 — leaving plenty of time to still book. Christkindlmarket

If you’ve faced a Chicago winter then you likely know of the Christkindlemarket, open this year until December 24. This market located in the Loop — with an additional location in Wrigleyville — is the destination for all holiday season enjoyers. Snack on aromatic roasted nuts, fresh pretzels and hot wine while you soak up the authentic German-style market experience. Shop from unique vendors whose products come from all around the world. Lightscape at Chicago Botanic Gardens

Of all the decorations and light shows across the North Shore, it’s hard to find one more unique than Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. From now through January 7, venture over to the gardens in Glencoe for “an after dark, illuminated trail” that takes you across the grounds to witness dazzling displays. Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas

In this production — based on the television special by legendary puppeteer Jim Henson — with only three days until Christmas, Mayor Fox announces that there will be a Christmas talent contest with a grand prize of $50 dollars. This sends a bit of hope into the heart of Emmet Otter whose family could use the money, so he devises to start his own jug band — but will they work out the kinks before the big show? Shark Feeding Tour

Be transported 8,000 miles away to the Indo-Pacific reef as the Shedd Aquarium gives guests from ages six and up an in-depth look at sharks and their lifestyle. This 75-minute behind-the-scenes experience allows visitors to witness meal time, learn how to prepare a meal fit for a shark, all while picking up facts from Shedd experts. Illumination: Tree Lights at Morton Arboretum

Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light

The Museum of Science and Industry is getting into the holiday spirit with their annual exhibit, Christmas Around The World and Holidays of Light. Take a journey across the globe without having to leave Chicago! The holiday tradition — which kicked off its 81st anniversary in November and will be open until January 7 — will bring wonder and even a little education to guests as they wind through the exhibit, which represents all the holidays this time of year including Christmas, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year and more! Disney100: The Exhibition

Celebrate a century of Disney magic as The Walt Disney Archives brings its vault to life at the Exhibition Hub Art Center in Chicago. With tickets available through the end of the month, Disney 100: The Exhibition invites guests to experience Disney’s storied journey, from classics like “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) to the recent “Encanto” (2021). This expansive 20,000+ square-foot exhibit, previously showcased in cities like Philadelphia and London, celebrates 100 years of Disney history through 14 interactive installations and more than 250 artifacts, props, costumes and memorabilia representing Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises.

December 1: 11th National Vigil For All Victims of Gun Violence in Chicago

Gun violence continues to plague our nation — even in 2021, Chicago saw more than 800 homicides. To combat this, survivors, families of victims and concerned citizens are banding together for the 11th Annual National Vigil to #EndGunViolenceChicago. The vigil will be held at Augustana Lutheran Church of Hyde Park starting at 6pm. Come with nothing but an open heart to support the community with. December 1-17: Evanston Made Holiday Market

December 14: Film & Discussion: “Without a Whisper – Konnon:Kwe” at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center

Prejudice, discrimination and hatred are often fueled by the erasure of groups of people from history. “Without A Whisper” explores the untold story of how Indigenous women influenced the suffragist movement in the US. December 15-17: “A Latin American Christmas” by The Newberry Consort, Chicago

The Newberry Consort revisits Christmastime melodies from the 15th-18th centuries with “A Latin American Christmas.” Spanning music from Peru, Spain and Guatemala, this festive ensemble includes spirited dances, rustic Christmas dramas and sonorous motets. Highlighted by the historic nativity play dialogue of Juan del Encina, performances feature traditional instruments, vocal ensembles and an amalgamation of indigenous and African elements.
