Should You Add Marijuana to Your Beauty Regimen?

Medical marijuana dispensaries have begun opening throughout Chicagoland and across the state, leaving Illinois residents to wonder whether legalization of recreational marijuana could follow. Interested in the benefits of marijuana without the high? Check out the latest beauty trend — products that harness the healing and nourishing properties of hemp.

Hemp is missing THC, the cannabinoid that would make you fail a drug test (source: KarmaCBDOils UK). What hemp does contain is another cannabinoid called CBD, which, because of its incredible healing properties, has become an increasingly popular ingredient in skincare and beauty treatments.

Hemp oil is a natural, non-greasy oil derived by pressing the seeds of the marijuana plant. Abundant in nutritional fatty acids like omega-3, -6, and -9, the oil mimics the protein found in human blood. When consumed, it helps build up the immune system and fights inflammation. Externally, it treats sensitive skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, rashes and cuts. When combined with neem oil (a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of the neem evergreen tree), hemp oil can help heal dark spots from acne.

“[The fatty acids are] excellent to help nourish our hair and skin because they act as a vegetable protein, so they work not only for lubrication — as oils do — but they also help to strengthen and nourish from the inside out,” says Jamyla Bennu, creator of natural skincare company Oyin Handmade.

Additionally, hemp oil contains 20 amino acids, which add protein, as well as vitamins A, C and E, antioxidants that help prevent aging. People who suffer from acne will also find relief in hemp, as the linolenic acid in the oil has amazing anti-inflammatory properties.

Owner Larisa Stupnitsky of Sasha G Salon and Spa in Wheeling sees hemp as a top organic beauty cure-all with a multitude of benefits. Customers have been lining up for Sasha G’s organic hemp-infused hot stone massage. During the treatment, the skin is warmed and pores are opened with wet heat. The oil is massaged into limbs to aid in muscle relaxation and provide relief from arthritis.

In addition to massage and facials, Stupnitsky incorporates hemp oil into regrowth hair treatments since the oil helps regrow your own hair. A client begins with up to six treatments in one week, and after that, just occasional appointments for maintenance. The response has been enthusiastic and women have noticed a considerable difference.

Anna Pamula, owner of Deerfield’s Renu Day Spa, has also been wowed by the powers of hemp and uses the oil in many of her treatments. For an additional $10, clients can add hemp oil to their treatment. In addition to hemp, Pamula incorporates cannabis lotions, oils and sprays into some of Renu’s massages, manicures and pedicures.
