In many ways, being green and staying cancer-free are synonymous. Here are ten of those ways.
1. Do your errands on foot instead of driving. Many types of cancer—including breast and colon cancer—are linked to being overweight.
2. Support your local farmer’s market. You may know that buying organic and local is a good way to avoid many herbicides, pesticides and fungicides that are proven carcinogens. Or, better yet …
3. Plant a cancer-fighting garden. Studies have shown vegetables like kale, cabbage and broccoli have cancer-fighting properties.
4. Use simple tools for your yard work. Without power tools, you’ll have peace. Just be sure to wear sunscreen and a straw hat to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.
6. Send a meaningful e-card instead of paper greetings. Don’t limit yourself to holidays like Mother’s Day; there are cards for everything from quitting smoking to getting a check-up.
7. Start a walking club. And if you’re really dedicated to joining the fight against cancer, consider registering for your local Relay for Life. If you want to bring your workout to a whole new level, consider training for an endurance event with the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation program.
8. Bike to work or school twice a week. The American Cancer Society guidelines recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity five days of the week.
