5 Tips for Choosing the Right Rehab

Lindsay McKenzie of Alden Estates of Skokie has put together 5 tips for choosing a short-term post-hospital rehab center.

Take a Tour
If there is one nonnegotiable in finding the right rehab center, it is taking a tour. Lindsay suggests calling rehab centers as soon as the physician’s office confirms a hospital date. She says about 10% of patients come to Alden sight unseen but she does not recommend it.

Make a Reservation
Just like at a hotel, an RSVP is recommended – especially if the facility is top-notch and offers a private room. About 80% of Alden patients make a reservation prior to their arrival.

Think Before You Pay
At Alden Estates of Skokie, all rooms are private – and there is no additional charge. Not so at other rehab centers, says Lindsay, who advises against paying extra if you can avoid it.

Location, Location, Location
Lindsay finds that loved ones and friends tend to visit more often when they can easily get to the rehab facility.

The Staff
The rehab facility should have certified physical and occupational therapists as well as nurses who are friendly and knowledgeable, which can be observed during the tour (see #1 above). A nurse who stops and says hi to someone on a tour is probably just as friendly with patients. Also, ask if the staff has undergone additional training. At Alden Estates of Skokie, all staff must pass a certification course in orthopedic protocols that was developed by nurses at Mayo Clinic exclusively for Alden.
