On Nov. 2, 2019, the Midwest Region of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (ACWIS) hosted its annual gala at The Geraghty in Chicago. While celebrating 70 years of scientific innovation, the roughly 300 guests in attendance raised more than $700,000 for the Institute’s mission of “science for the benefit of humanity.”
Speakers included Master of Ceremonies Coco Soodek, former ACWIS Midwest Region board chair and current board member; ACWIS CEO Dave Doneson; Dr. Ofer Yizhar, a Weizmann neurobiologist; Event Chairs Janet and Steve Anixter and JoAnn Anixter Silva; and ACWIS National Board Member and Midwest Region Board Chair Marilyn Perlman. The evening’s Honorary Chairs were Renée and Lester Crown and Co-Chairs were the Edward & Lester Anixter Family Foundation, the Brodsky Family, David Jonas, and Richard and Linda Price and Family.
During the event, Soodek shared some of the discoveries made by Weizmann scientists, including learning that planting trees near deserts could eliminate 10 percent of carbon in the atmosphere and that supplements in apples, strawberries, watermelon, beets, and spinach might help those with gastrointestinal conditions.
