Quick and Easy: Hoops with Heart

847 Hoops is offering 7th and 8th graders the chance to hone their basketball skills during the summer, for free.

Darren Barndt, a basketball coach at Lake Forest High School, and his former player Aron Khurana founded 847 Hoops to bring people together through the love of basketball. The participants are all of different ethnicities and socio-economic classes, so in addition to working on their basketball skills, they are enhancing their understanding of people from all kinds of backgrounds. They had 44 participants their first year, exceeding their goal of 30.

Now beginning their second year, they hope to expand to three times that number. This means raising a lot more money, which goes towards gym fees, insurance and t-shirts for the kids. In order to keep the camp free, they are hoping to raise $20,000 to $25,000 dollars.

This year’s camp takes place from July 16th through July 20th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Waukegan Park District’s Field House Sport & Fitness Center. The deadline to sign up is July 4th. For questions or to donate, contact Darren Barndt at hoops847@yahoo.com
