Hot Coffee and Something Sweet: A Sure Cure for the Midwinter Blues

People in the Chicago ‘burbs are wondering, “When is winter finally going to end?”

Sadly, we still have a few months to soldier through before the tulips bloom, robins return, and outdoor adventures abound, but never fear!

Step away from your desk, grab your favorite well-worn book or Kindle, call a friend and warm up around a toasty beverage and homemade delicacy at one of these cozy independent cafés.

Brothers K Coffee House
500 Main Street, Evanston

Still looking for a local spot that makes you feel like you’re on Cheers? Look no further. This hip Evanston joint is run by a former pastor and a pro-golfer who have as much passion for coffee as they do for the people who come in and drink it. It’s the perfect place for a meet-up and makes a great second office!

Beans & Leaves Coffee & Tea Café
320 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove

A place to “dream big dreams,” this quaint spot is a great location to meet up with friends over a hot cuppa joe (or tea). Sample from their variety of worldly coffees and loose teas, and don’t miss the cookie dough latte!

Alchemy Coffee & Bake House
416 Linden Avenue, Wilmette

This place may be small, but boy does it have character!  When you stop in, don’t forget to try one of Blair’s delicious homemade scones. If you still think it’s too cold to go out, they’ll deliver a pound of your favorite coffee straight to your door (ask for a wheel of scones while you’re at it).

Cafe Aroma
561 Lincoln, Winnetka

Cafe Aroma is a beautiful, European-style café with a Persian vibe that pays tribute to owner Mitra Ryndak’s roots.  Enjoy a morning pastry or invite a girlfriend and savor lunch from their extensive menu.

Liquid Fusion
Sand-Mil Plaza, 3375 Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook

While many people associate Liquid Fusion with their delicious frozen bubble drinks, this comfortable locale also boasts an exceptional array of hot teas and a great coffee list. Come in and linger over a steaming pot with your favorite New York Times bestseller.

Newport Coffee House
1121 Half Day Road, Bannockburn

Just ask any of the diehard regulars: Newport can’t be beat. This local coffee shop prides itself on roasting all its coffees in-house to insure customers the freshest beans. Check their events calendar for evenings when local musicians play.

Perks Café
601 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield

Perks is a great midday getaway spot for a meeting or escape. The delicious sandwich menu compliments the wonderful coffees. FYI: If you stop in on your way to work, their muffins are supposed to be the best in Chicagoland!
