Lincoln Park Zoo Celebrates National Zoo Lovers Day

Lincoln Park Zoo

Reflecting on a lifetime of visits to the zoo triggers vivid recollections of colorful sights, odd smells, and emotions ranging from childish amazement to adult amusement. April 8 marks National Zoo Lovers Day, and the Lincoln Park Zoo is celebrating its residents and patrons.

“I cherish the zoo for the look of wonder and excitement that I see on my children’s faces every time we walk in the front gate,” says Shellane Mulcahy, Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo member. “And I love the zoo for its ability to bring out the child in me.”

Beth Kies, also a Women’s Board member, compares the zoo to Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” “It gives endlessly to Chicago in every imaginable way year in and year out, good weather and bad … I am so grateful for our zoo,” Kies says.

Daily activities open to zoo visitors include cow milking, hands-on interactions with wildlife and free flight feeding.

Most recently, the zoo celebrated the birth of a Japanese macaque, or snow monkey, at the Regenstein Macaque Forest.
