Great Chicago Seed Swap

F-G_Seed_SwapCome by, meet other gardeners (and gardeners-in-training), share stories and trade seeds during the first-ever “Great Chicago Seed Swap!” during the Chicago Flower & Garden Show at Navy Pier on Sunday, March 11.

The fun begins at 3 p.m. outside the “White House Let’s Move Garden” and continues until seeds are gone.

Backyard gardeners and school gardeners are welcome. Swap seeds you’ve collected or accumulated for other annuals, perennials or vegetables. Learn about great seed starting projects for kids of all ages, and how you can sow seeds at home using household items you would normally toss away. For every seed packet you bring, you may take another one home. Seeds are exchanged on a first come first served basis.

To participate, just package your home-saved seeds in paper coin envelopes or plastic baggies. Clearly print the name of the plant on a label on the outside and include any other information you think a gardener would need to grow it successfully, such as whether it’s an annual, perennial or vegetable and the year the seeds were collected from your garden. Visitors who don’t have seeds and would like to participate may purchase them from D. Landreth Seed Company, the exclusive seed seller in the show’s Marketplace.

Seed swappers also will have an opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite herb in the OneSeedChicago election. The herb that receives the most votes will be mailed free of charge to those who vote.

With a legacy in Chicago that can be traced to 1847, the Chicago Flower & Garden Show welcomes 60,000-plus visitors to Navy Pier annually, and is designed to inspire, educate and motivate visitors no matter their gardening skill level or interest. Tickets to the Chicago Flower & Garden Show are available at the Navy Pier box office and at a discount online.
