There have been several reports recently of burglaries and attempted thefts in the North Shore, including an attempted carjacking, an armed robbery at the Wilmette Jimmy John’s and a string of neighborhood burglaries.
Police are urging citizens and business owners to be aware of their surroundings and make sure to take some precautions to dissuade potential home and car burglaries.
In an email to Wilmette Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce members, Police Chief Brian King wrote, “This is an excellent time to review security measures with your employees and, as always, please do not hesitate to call the police if you observe suspicious persons or vehicles near your businesses.”
The Winnetka Police Department states on their website that “In three out of four car burglaries reported to the Winnetka Police Department, the vehicles had been left unlocked” and offers tips to avoiding auto burglary and theft. Some of the tips include keeping your home and garage well lit at night, removing valuables and making sure your vehicle is locked, even if it is in your driveway.
The Evanston Police Department offers tips for your home, which include removing your garage door opener from your car, don’t let the mail or newspaper pile up, securing your windows in place and reaching out to the police if you are going on vacation.
The Wilmette Police Department also advises keeping bicycles locked in a permanent place, making sure you check your patio and sliding doors, adding extra locking mechanisms and avoiding opening doors to strangers.
