‘She Helped Me Be the Mom I Wanted to Be’: Help Nurse-Family Partnership Provide Life-Changing Support to Families

When Al-Nisa found out she was pregnant during her senior year of college, she faced overwhelming challenges. Newly married, in an abusive relationship, and without health insurance, she feared not just for herself, but for her unborn child — and she needed help.

That help came in the form of her Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) nurse.

“Just the time she took explaining everything to me made me feel like I was going to get the answers and support I was looking for,” Al-Nisa recalls. Together, they built a plan to manage her high blood pressure, recognize warning signs that required medical attention, and save money by avoiding unnecessary emergency room visits. With her nurse’s guidance, Al-Nisa began to see a way forward.

Stories like Al-Nisa’s are at the heart of Nurse-Family Partnership’s mission: to empower first-time moms facing health, social, and economic challenges to create healthier, brighter futures for their families. Each year, NFP provides care to more than 55,000 families in 40 states, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and tribal communities across the nation.

On November 26, NFP will launch its year-end fundraising campaign to connect even more families to the resources they need to have a healthy pregnancy and birth and for their newborn children to thrive.

To inspire giving, the Make It Better Foundation has pledged a $100,000 matching grant, doubling the impact of each dollar donated, up to $100,000, online by midnight, Dec. 31 or checks dated Dec. 31.

“We envision a future where every child and family have the resources and community they need to achieve their dreams,” said NFP President & CEO Charlotte Min-Harris. “We’re focused on closing the health equity gap for families and communities most in need. We want to provide a lifeline and a continuum of care to families across the country. Our partnership with the Make It Better Foundation will enable us to reach thousands more families in 2025.”

Today, Al-Nisa’s daughter is thriving in a safe, loving home, surrounded by the structure and care her mother worked so hard to build. “My nurse helped me learn to be the kind of mom I wanted to be… the one who reads bedtime stories, builds literacy, and encourages play and imagination,” she says.

With the support of donors, NFP continues to be a lifeline for families like Al-Nisa’s, providing first-time moms with the care, resources, and hope they need to write their own success stories.
