Another school year has begun, and homework is once again on your family’s to-do list.
Busy schedules mean you can’t always sit down with your child as they work through math problems and study giant history books. Whether you need a little assistance when it comes to organization or studying on the go, these apps make the grade—and so will your student.
Elementary School
Spelling Tutor ($0.99): Your child can now practice his or her spelling words no matter where you are. Create word lists by recording audio. Then, have your child listen and type out their answers. After taking the test, scores are saved and can be sent to your email account.
National Geographic World Atlas ($1.99): Your little student has the world at their fingertips…literally. Spin the interactive 3D globe and zoom in on the region your child is studying. Learn facts about individual countries and capital cities, including currency and demographics.
Stack the States ($0.99): Test your child’s knowledge on all 50 states with this game, which covers capitals, abbreviations, nicknames and flags. To play, answer questions about each state to earn states for your own personalized map. As more states are earned, four additional games can be unlocked for even more learning.
Middle School
Khan Academy (free): If your child has a question, the Khan Academy will have the answer. With this iPhone and iPad app, get access to more than 4,200 videos, ranging from K-12 math, humanities and SAT prep. On the iPad, download videos in order to watch without Internet access.
Evernote Peek (free): Testing your knowledge has never been easier. This app is designed for the iPad 2 Smart Cover, but it also comes with a virtual cover. Using Evernote, take your own notes and create personalized study material. Lift the first flap of your Smart Cover to view the question. Once you think you know the answer, lift the second flap to see if you’re correct.
myHomework Student Planner (free): Your child will never have an excuse for forgetting homework again. Keep track of individual classes and set reminders for each assignment. The app works for time-, block- and period-based schedules.
High School
iHomework ($1.99): As the year progresses, organization may begin to slip. This app allows students to keep track of everything from reading assignments to grades to teacher contact info.
STUDYBLUE (free): Do serious studying with custom flashcards using text, pictures and audio, or search flashcards already made by other students. Study stats keep track of what your student is struggling with the most, and they can set reminders to look over flashcards during lunch or before soccer practice. Plus, they can connect with classmates who also have the app.
iFormulas (free): They’ll never forget a math formula again, even if they forgot their textbook and notes in their locker. This app allows you to search through hundreds of formulas and favorite those you use most.
