Fall Makeup: Think Drama

Move over light colors and sheer makeup of summer; here comes some drama! This fall, makeup is dramatic, whether on the eyes or lips.

North Shore makeup artist Lisa Perry says that a smokey eye, with metallic accents is one way to head into fall. “This fall is all about dramatic color with balance,” says Perry. “When we say dramatic for eyes, we mean smokey and dark. But for lips, we’re talking about heavy pigments versus light glosses from summer.”

Lip colors to watch for the fall are in the currant tones—berries, raisins, and, of course, classic red.

Perry says fall is a great time to assess your makeup drawer, not only because of new color trends, but because it’s time to adjust your foundation to your post-summer skin.

“Many people say ‘oh I’ll just add bronzer’, but what they really need to do is get a new foundation to match their skin tone, so that the all over look will be even,” Perry says.

Lisa Slagle, national make-up artist for Trish McEvoy, couldn’t agree more. “Once your skin is evened out and prepped, your makeup, whether dramatic or understated, will look that much better,” she says. It’s almost like the little black dress; once you have that piece, you can accessorize it with any colors to achieve the look you want.

Slagle says that during recession times, the items you should invest in are:

  • a foundation that matches your skin tone
  • an eye base that covers any discoloration on lids
  • a concealer to hide under eye imperfections
  • skin care products that enhance your skin

Slagle strongly encourages women to shop in their own makeup bag before heading to the makeup counter. She suggests pulling your favorite shades and combining them to work with this seasons’ trends. “Once you know what you have and what works, then come to the counter to see how you can compliment your current collection,” said Slagle.

Here are some great places to get makeup and makeup advice on the North Shore:

  • Blue Mercury
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Neiman Marcus Northbrook

Nina’s makeup picks

Hello, my name is Nina, and I am a makeup-aholic. Buying new makeup (in my opinion) is equivalent to buying a new outfit. These are some of my favorite makeup must haves, and a few from some friends. Please share some of your favorites, too.

The Shu Umera eyelash curler

An item I cannot.live.without. As a long time sufferer of thin and downward angled lashes, this curler is better than all the others I have tried, giving a natural and long lasting curl.

Christian Dior Iconic Mascara

Again, as an eyelash underachiever, I found that this mascara is long wearing and holds the lashes all day long.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

The Best drugstore mascara out there! As my friend Diane says, “green and pink baby!”

Trish McEvoy Flawless Concealer Pen

Definitely pricey, but so worth the investment as it covers the dark under-eye circles that taunt me daily.

Nars The Multiple

This handy purse size stick is an all in one color that warms up eyes, cheeks and lips, too!

Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer

In 13 different colors, this $5 miracle is great to keep in your car to throw on your lips to add a little color to your pucker! Not only does it look good, it has nourishing Vitamin E to keep your kisser kissable.
