For the third straight year, The Record North Shore was chosen to participate in a special fundraising program that benefits independent local news.
Every donation to The Record from now until the end of the year will be matched dollar for dollar up to $15,000. That means the program can provide the nonprofit newsroom with $30,000 to power credible reporting for the community.
“NewsMatch is our largest and most-important campaign of the year,” Record Editor in Chief Joe Coughlin has said. “The support, if we hit our goals, allows us to focus more time and energy on impactful local stories and fewer resources on fundraising. And that’s what the community deserves.”

The Record launched on Oct. 1, 2020, to restore responsible and independent local-news coverage in the northern suburbs. As a nonprofit newsroom, The Record’s journalism is fueled almost entirely by the community that benefits from it. Subscriptions, individual donations and local sponsors account for more than 80 percent of Record funding.
Through two years, The Record has published more than 1,600 local stories, providing responsibly produced information on everything from COVID-19 to land development to local government decisions and discussion. All of The Record’s public-service work is free for all to read.
The Record also provides unmatched writing about local people, places, events and sports.
More than 500,000 readers have viewed The Record’s award-winning reporting at its daily website,TheRecordNorthShore.org.
The Record raised $14,000 through last year’s campaign, and thanks to the community’s support received a grant for more than $16,000 for the efforts.
This year, NewsMatch — in partnership with the Institute for Nonprofit News — will match every donation (limit $1,000) made to The Record in November and December until those donations reach $15,000. If you prefer monthly gifts, the program will also match an entire year’s worth — for a $50 monthly donation, NewsMatch will provide $600.
The program also gives bonus funds for new donors. So if you value The Record’s news coverage and wish to donate, no gift is too small.
“Reliable news and information is vital to a community’s well-being,” Coughlin has said. “Everybody deserves to have access to local information that informs their daily lives. That’s what we do, and resident support is the engine. We hope you can support those efforts. And we thank those we have and continue to do so.”
