For over a century, March 8 has marked the global celebration of International Women’s Day. Adopted by the United Nations in 1975, the holiday pays homage to women’s achievements throughout history, while continuing to accelerate and demand change, for a world free of gender discrimination, bias and barriers.
The theme of 2019 is #BalanceforBetter. Everyone has a part to play in making sure each person is counted and has a seat at the table. Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue.

JCC Chicago celebrated International Women’s Day 2019 with “Cocktails. Conversation. Community. For Her.” Hosted at the Hotel at Midtown, the celebratory evening featured a keynote speech by television producer Danielle Claman Gelber on the intersection of community, arts and culture, and female leadership.
Gelber is an established television producer, network executive and founder of the television production company, Acoustic Productions. She previously served as executive producer of NBC’s: Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. Gelber is widely known for the development of the hit television shows: Weeds, The X-Files, Beverly Hills: 90210, Melrose Place, Ally McBeal, The Sopranos, Dawson’s Creek and The L Word.
Emily Stone is Associate Editor at Make It Better. She earned a degree in journalism from Elon University in North Carolina. Along with writing, Stone has a passion for digital storytelling and photography. Her work is published in Chicago Athlete Magazine. Stone is a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Stone is a fluent Spanish speaker who in her free time loves a good dance class.
