Better Makers: Sister Helen Prejean Accepts Legacy Award at the James B. Moran Center Benefit

On April 15th the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy held their annual “Voices For Mercy” benefit at 27 Live in Evanston. The evening hosted over 250 guests including Dead Man Walking author, national anti-death penalty advocate, and Legacy Award Winner, Sister Helen Prejean. Guests were able to enjoy the presentation of Prejean’s Honorable James B. Moran Justice from the Lighthouse Legacy Award and her inspiring words and lessons including her belief that the “gift of privilege is the ability to work hard for justice and to stand alongside those who are less privileged.”

As the Social Justice Award Winners for Make It Better’s 4th Annual Philanthropy Awards, they also premiered their new video to their supporters, which, as explained by Moran Center Director of Social Work Kristin Kennard, is a very useful tool to “convey the impact of the work that [they] do.” The successful benefit was able to raise over $98,000, 100 percent of which will go straight to their mission of “ensuring justice and restoring hope” as well as ending the school-to-prison pipeline.
