The Morton Arboretum celebrated 1 million visitors for the second year in a row in December 2016, making it one of only seven public gardens in the U.S. to achieve this milestone. After 94 years in operation, the Arboretum has continued to grow in membership, with 44,074 members currently. According to the Arboretum’s press release, the garden surprised its one-millionth visitor, Eldon Davis, with “special gifts and lunch from the Arboretum.” Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company, founded the Arboretum in 1922.
