“Page it Forward”: Not Your Average Book Drive

When United Way of Lake County administered a kindergarten readiness assessment in Waukegan, they discovered that 76% of resident six year-olds had no knowledge of literature – meaning, they’d never seen a book.

Never seen a book?

So, the organization took action. They partnered with Bernie’s Book Bank of Lake Forest to create Lake County’s Biggest Book Drive. The goal? Some 100,000 books donated to the low-income children of Lake County who don’t have books at home.

The nonprofit pair is giving the conventional book drive a contemporary twist.

Founder and Executive Director of Bernie’s Book Bank Brian Floriani says, “This summer-long celebration of reading will help to unite children needing books with books needing children. Children grow out of books as quickly as they grow out of shoes, so the supply of quality used children’s books is nearly limitless.”

The ‘Page it Forward’ book drive is a great reason to dust off your bookshelves and get those books into the hands of children who desperately need them. Until Sept. 11, “Page It Forward” book drop-off events will be held at community and corporate locations.

Here’s how you can help:

  • “Like” the ‘Page it Forward’ Facebook page, and Harris Bank will donate one book
  • Text “Page” to 85944, and then reply “yes” to confirm your $10 donation
  • Host a “Book Party” and ask friends to bring their children’s outgrown books
