Celebrating its 49th year, Earth Day returns on April 22 with opportunities around the Bay for fans of the earth to support the ground, water and air that sustains us. Here is a sampling of family- and planet-friendly events in Marin and beyond.
California State Parks Open House at China Camp State Park
The Village at China Camp, San Rafael

Help remove invasive plants, repair split rail fencing or join in a Spanish-language bird-watching hike, among many other activities at this “explore the park” open house. The events are part of a Bay Area-wide celebration, including another open house at Half Moon Bay State Beach, and work days at Benicia State Recreation Area, Angel Island State Park, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, and Mount Diablo State Park.
Earth Day at the Oakland Zoo

This year’s event focuses on the theme Planting for Pollinators. Guests can learn about the different ways to save our great pollinator species that are so essential to our ecosystem, and take a pledge to grow the plants that support them. Bring an old cellphone to recycle to get a free train ride.
Earth Day with Marin County Parks

Help keep this beautiful park with views of Mount Tam clean and picturesque. A sun hat and comfortable yet sturdy work gloves are a good idea if you’re joining in on this effort to clean up Corte Madera Creek and Hal Brown Park at Creekside.

Every year, volunteers get together to eradicate the invasive species French and Scotch broom, in an event endearingly titled the Bald Hill Broom Bust. Hike, bike, or carpool to the site for optional Earth Day vibes.

This scenic beach combines care for the environment with arts and activities. Help with a beach cleanup or creek restoration, then join in a sculpture-making project with natural materials ,or learn about sand globe making.
Presidio Trust Earth Day

Help restore natural areas and improve wildlife corridor areas in San Francisco’s scenic Presidio area. The volunteer session will end with a BBQ potluck and lawn games.
