Chants of “USA! USA!” are fading into the background as we close the book on the 2010 Winter Olympics and gear up for spring, but North Shore admiration runs deep–with that, we congratulate our four Olympic athletes and wish them the best in their future endeavors:
Shani Davis: This Evanston native added two more medals to his already-impressive collection–a gold medal finish in the Men’s 1000-meter race, and a silver in the Men’s 1500-meter race. Just over half a mile in a minute? Not too shabby, Shani!
Brian Hansen: Anyone who’s driven down Lake Ave. in Glenview knows how proud the Glen Oak Acres neighborhood is of their Olympian speedskater. The signs that cheered him on during the Games have been dressed up with silver medals, all to celebrate his second place finish in the Men’s Team Pursuit.
Lana Gehring: Another Glenview resident, Gehring and her short-track speedskating teammates are relishing a surprise bronze-medal finish in the Ladies’ 3000-meter relay. Team USA was awarded the bronze after another team was disqualified.
Jamie Moriarty: Winnetka’s Moriarty is one of the many brave athletes to take to the track at Whistler Mountain after the untimely accidental death of a Georgian luger. While Moriarty did not medal, his four-man crew–including driver Mike Kohn, and pushers Bill Schuffenhauer and Nick Cunningham placed 13th overall and cheered on teammates Steve Holcomb, Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz as they took first place.
