The Camp: Refresh and Retreat Stroke Camp offers a chance to get away from the rigor and troubles of daily life that many survivors and their care givers face while providing an opportunity to raise public awareness, provide education, relaxation, socialization and support. If just for a short time, they are free from the pressures of daily living.
At the camp there are sing-alongs, drum circles, crafts, games, time for personal and group reflection as well as informative sessions led by medical professionals. The entire staff consists of volunteers.
Chuck, a stroke survivor, says that to him “the most important thing is stroke survivors and care givers can be alone with other survivors and care givers. We shared stories about our struggles with family and with friends. All of us had just met but it didn’t matter, we had something in common, a common bond that couldn’t be broken. Stroke connected us. The whole camp experience makes stroke survivors feel whole and not disabled. For the first time since my stroke I didn’t feel different, disabled, or unusual. I felt whole.”
