This is the season of giving. The many families of our firm have participated in many acts of service, performed in Christmas pageants, given generously to their favorite causes, and granted wishes to those less fortunate. Most often these acts go without fanfare or are performed anonymously because it is simply part of our character and the true gift of giving is the feeling you get when you give from your heart.
This year, in addition to the usual sleigh full of good deeds, we granted a wish. A good friend commented on a video that caused me to watch because it promises to be a true “feel good” story. It was the story of Ron Turner, Winnetka refuse collector, created by local production company Audlank Media, a not-for-profit founded by Emmy Award-winning journalist Julie Peterson. My wife, Dee, and I were so moved, we offered to grant Ron’s wish of traveling to Germany.
Ron’s story is one that usually doesn’t make the front page. He is an everyday hero, performing his job with enthusiasm, always making time to spread joy along his route. My family has many civil servants and military personnel, so I immediately connected with the story. We all have our everyday heroes.
Ron is special, not for some sensational act or deed, but he is special because every day he lives life in such a way to give joy to others. Please take a look at the video below — it’s sure to put a smile on your face. We have decided to grant Ron’s wish by gifting him airline tickets.
