Lyric’s Glittering Diamond Anniversary Season!

Lyric Opera of Chicago promises an array of unforgettable experiences in its 60th anniversary season with operas and special events that have something for everyone.

Lyric launched in 1954 with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” so it’s only fitting that the diamond jubilee begins with a new production from the Goodman Theatre’s Robert Falls (September 27 to October 29). This “Giovanni’moves the action to 1920s Spain and features a sexy, talented cast led by Mariusz Kwiecien (pictured top right) as the ultimate bad boy.

The luminous Renée Fleming returns to Lyric’s stage in Strauss’ elegant “Capriccio” (October 6-28), playing a countess who is torn between two men: a composer and a poet. Audiences throughout the Civic Opera House will have an up-close view of this intimate drama. At four select performances, large video screens will be placed on the balcony levels broadcasting live high-definition video that captures all the sumptuous detail of this production.

Verdi’s larger-than-life “Il Trovatore” (October 27 to November 29) is a fiery blend of revenge and romance with music to match, including the famous Anvil Chorus. Lyric’s production is a huge spectacle that features some of the most massive sets in Lyric’s current arsenal.

Chicago favorite Eric Owens stars in the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess” (November 17 to December 20). This classic story of love and loss features iconic songs such as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’.”

If you love historical drama, look no further than Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” (December 6 to January 16). In this dramatic retelling of the love triangle between Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, and Jane Seymour, divas Sondra Radvanovsky and Jamie Barton face off in a vocal showdown for the king’s love.

Puccini’s “Tosca” (January 24 to March 14) is melodrama at its finest. An impulsive opera star pays the ultimate price to save the man she loves. This heartbreaking story with achingly beautiful music is on par with the composer’s other beloved masterpieces “Madama Butterfly” and “La Bohème.”

Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” (February 9 to March 6) explores the tension between eroticism and pure love with a dream cast that includes celebrated tenor Johan Botha in the title role. A monumental vocal, choral and orchestral feast, “Tannhäuser” contains some of Wagner’s most majestic music.

The final opera of the season is Mieczysław Weinberg’s “The Passenger” (February 24 to March 15), a poignant and gripping 20th-century masterpiece. This haunting tale of the Holocaust portrays the story from the perspectives of both victim and perpetrator in a work that was only recently rediscovered after almost 40 years of suppression.

The 60th anniversary celebration includes more than just opera. Join us on November 1 for our spectacular Anniversary Concert. Glee star Jane Lynch, Renée Fleming, a cavalcade of opera stars, jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, and members of The Second City ensemble help salute Lyric’s first 60 years.

Lyric also presents a new production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic “Carousel” from Tony Award-winning director Rob Ashford (April 10 to May 3). Plus, superstar pianist Lang Langreturns to Lyric for one night only on May 9.

Long Live Passion as Lyric Opera of Chicago looks forward to its next 60 years. Don’t miss a moment! For tickets and more information, visit lyricopera.org or call 312-827-5600.
