Fight the Brittle Battle: Conditioning Hair Treatments

Dry skin, chapped lips and split ends—’tis the season when moisture is the missing element of the Midwest.

As you continue to blow dry, straighten or curl your locks during these chilly months, you might find your hair to be staticky, lifeless or even straw-like due to the endless amount of heat being pumped into our homes and offices. There are tons of products out there that promise to give your hair an extra boost of moisture and that salon-visit shine. We’ve sifted through some of the newest and a few tried-and-true treatments to guide you toward the best product for your parched tresses.

L’Oreal Power Moisture Moisture Rush Mask

Who wouldn’t want a flowing mane like Victoria Secret model Doutzen Kroes? She’s the spokesperson for L’Oreal’s new Power Moisture line. Following the directions to let it soak in for 3-5 minutes and then rinse, the mask didn’t provide earth-shattering results. My hair felt smoother, but it didn’t have the promised “silky” appearance. It’s a decent product; perhaps after more uses, it will provide more apparent results. $7, Ulta

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask

This has product has been around for years, and is my go-to rescue product since I tried an at-home hair coloring kit about five years ago that did some damage. Now that my hair is color-free, I still use it weekly. The mask does a great job detangling (especially if you have curly hair) and makes hair noticeably softer and more lustrous. It also has a nice scent that will last even if you blow-dry your hair—always an added plus. $7, CVS

Pureology Hydrate Hydra Whip

While the price tag is steep, Pureology’s Hydra Whip miracle is well worth the money. Perfect for colored or over-processed locks, this product can enliven hair in any condition. The hydrating combination of jojoba, green tea and shea butter is awesome and while my uncolored hair can’t voucher for it, many online reviewers boast that it doesn’t fade their hair color. This mask might be a bit much if you’re looking for a simple shield against the dry winter, but for someone with more serious hair damage, it’s an extraordinary remedy. $53, Target

Redken Curvaceous Curl Dive Nourishing Mask

Redken’s Curvaceous line replaced its Fresh Curls products a few months ago and a curly-haired friend recently suggested it to me. The hair care brand has managed to find a good balance of moisture for ringlets; this product will hydrate but not weigh down curls, leaving them bouncy and smooth from root to tip. $19, Ulta
