Layering is a necessity again. We’ve sifted through all of the fall catalogs and revisited the fall 2012 fashion shows to bring you our top five jacket styles for October’s transition to fall.
1. The Fitted Blazer
This piece is a classic and can put that extra bit of polish (and warmth) to almost any outfit. J.Crew carries an assortment of styles and colors that will last serve you well for many seasons (I talk from experience). Our favorite style is the Hacking jacket, which hits just below the waist. Unlike a cropped blazer, the Hacking creates a longer silhouette that makes it easier to pair with dark pair of skinnies or pencil skirt without over-accentuating your hips

2. The Parka
Don’t freak out, we’re not suggesting the down-filled, sleeping-bag-like coats meant for tundras…yet. The parkas we have in mind are constructed out of lightweight materials like canvas and nylon. These slouchy jackets are great for a trip to the park after school with the kids or just a day of running errands over the weekend.

3. The Bomber
A sleek leather bomber will surely put a little swagger in your step this fall. Fitted at the hip and decorated with shiny zippers and buttons, these jackets are both cool and sexy—the perfect accomplice for dinner and drinks at a new swanky restaurant in the city.

4. The Poncho
Envelop yourself in warmth while wearing a super cuddly poncho this season. Try a wool knit cape or this sherpa-lined version from Anthropologie, this type of jacket can work for almost every body type. But keep in mind you’ll want to wear something more tapered on the bottom to keep from looking sloppy and oversized.

5. The Trench
While this is usually a spring prerequisite, a trench be just as useful in the fall when rain can be plentiful. The two best things about this jacket are the belt, which can make your waist look teeny tiny, and the tailored cut, which makes it appropriate for both work and play. From quilted to plaid, treat yourself to a trench that has a bit of personality and skip that plain old khaki one.
