Beachy Keen: Great Summer Carryalls At Any Price

As if the sun-drenched blue skies and warm weather weren’t enough to make us excited for summer, Mibs scoured North Shore boutiques for the greatest beach bags (at some insanely good prices). Regardless of what you want your bag to say about you, we found something for everyone.

Make a statement. How fun would it be to spend the day at the pool with this eye-catching bag on your arm? Great for a day at the office or a day at the beach, this sequined homage to Frida Kahlo will surely be a conversation starter. $120, Gavin, 1939 Central St., Evanston, 847-328-7407.

Be frugally fabulous. Have you long admired Lilly Pulitzer’s colorful collections but stayed away because of the price? Well, thanks to LP’s vast line of summer beach bags, there’s something for everyone—the “Loose Lilly Bag” is a particular fave. It’s the perfect combo of print, affordability and an easy, take-me-anywhere feel. Comes in a number of Lilly’s fun summer fabrics. $78, Lillie Alexander Ltd., 197 Westminster, Lake Forest, 847-234-5858.

Keep it green. These environmentally friendly bags are made for the pool and beach. In pink and green or navy and white, these bags wipe clean no matter where your summer adventure takes you. And they’re so affordable, you may even want to pick up a coordinating beach towel or fresh new set of flip-flops. $28, Crème de la Crème, 903 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka, 847-446-2228.

Palm Beach or Gilson Beach? There’s something about all things J.McLaughlin that reminds us of the iconic Worth Avenue in Palm Beach proper. So, when I discovered this effortlessly chic canvas summer bag with pockets for your pool pass, keys and PDA—I was quick to take note. With the J.McLaughlin logo located just under the bright orange leather trim, this bag can take you from a buttoned-up business meeting to a bikini-clad afternoon. With a little Scotchgard to keep this bag pristine, you’ll be good to go. $119, J.McLaughlin, 567A Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, 847-784-1730.

Be stylish, yet practical. New to the North Shore, Posh is making a name for itself as a purveyor of beautiful gifts and lingerie. But mixed in among the luxurious nighties were these fabulous Emilie Sloan bags from Seattle (Posh is the only store to carry them locally). Take a little or a lot with you in this water-resistant, carryall tote called “Stasha.” This bag is designed with an interior clasp that easily converts it into a fun, smaller, triangular shape. Fully lined, with inside pockets, key clasp, and magnetic snap closure, it comes in a variety of colors—kiwi is my favorite. $58, Posh, 658 Central Ave., Highland Park, 847-945-POSH.

Don’t forget the kids! Lucky for North Shore moms, Lake Bluff’s Michelle Hans is now designing monogrammed beach totes for the kiddos. Large enough to hold a beach towel as well as other day camp essentials, there will be no question which bag belongs to whom when the sun goes down. $30, Michelle Hans at michellerenee@me.com.
