Anna Pamula of Deerfield’s Renu Day Spa isn’t your typical spa owner.
Although one of her passions is beauty, her other passion is wellness, specifically helping women affected by cancer or other immune disorders. Pamula researches the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of women who are dealing with illness, and she has found that various natural healing techniques and new-age treatments have made a tremendous impact on the lives of her clients.
Pamula prides herself on the fact that every Renu employee is certified in treating immunosuppressed diseases, such as cancer, lupus, chronic fatigue, diabetes, psoriasis and eczema—the only such spa in the state. Renu offers numerous therapies to help alleviate pain, including chakra balancing, lymphatic drainage massage, Reike energy, gemstone therapy, and an Indian technique called Shiroabhyanga. Furthermore, the spa only uses plant-based organic and preservative-free products, as the skin becomes so fragile during cancer treatments.
Maureen Strassburger of Lake Forest was diagnosed with breast cancer and sought ways to reduce her pain and strengthen her immune system in between chemotherapy treatments. “Renu provides healthy, organic and safe services that lessened my risks of infection and chemical exposure; (infection) is always possible with such a compromised immune system,” Strassburger says. “Anna is very informed about many alternative restorative techniques that she incorporates into her spa treatments. Like Strassburger, Stevi Marks of Deerfield was diagnosed with breast cancer and turned to Renu between treatments. “Anna and Renu had a much bigger part in easing my journey than they realize,” Marks says. “Not only did they treat me kindly and ensure that the environment was clean and all equipment sterile, they also offered me courtesies such as not being exposed to the UV lights that are used to dry nails, and making sure that my pedicures were in a quiet atmosphere. Anna herself offered Reiki expertise, and she helped me choose specific massages and facials using organic oils, stones, etc., designed to promote healing and to release toxins. Anna is extraordinarily well-versed in healing and provides all of her clients the opportunity to design the best treatment and choose the best services to promote their well-being and health. Pamula has partnered with American Cancer Society to create evenings for cancer patients in hopes of renewing optimism in their lives.
