Lollapalooza 2014 Preview: Beyond the Headliners

music-Lollapalooza-previewLollapalooza is approaching (August 1-3), and it’s time to start thinking about the bands you want to see.

At this point, everyone knows the headliners and main-stage artists, but what about the bands toward the bottom of the lineup list? Yes, their names are written in a smaller font, but that doesn’t mean they won’t put on a good show, just that they’re not as well known—at least so far.

Here’s a list of some lesser-known bands you’ll want to see and a few songs to get to know them by. To view the full line up and schedule, visit Lollapalooza’s website.

Lucius, Friday, 1:45-2:45 p.m.

Often described as having great charisma and charm, this quintet brings a unique sound to Lollapalooza. Imagine Arcade Fire plus a synthesizer. Give these songs a listen:

Bombay Bicycle Club, Friday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

“So Long See You Tomorrow” topped album charts in February, so it’s safe to say that Bombay Bicycle Club is having a breakout year. This English indie-rock band won’t let you down, and you’ll enjoy the band’s experiments with other genres of music.

The Temper Trap, Saturday, 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Originating in Melbourne, Australia, and eventually relocating to London, The Temper Trap has been performing since 2005. Their indie-rock style continues to receive praise, and with a third album approaching, you won’t want to miss this performance.

Smallpools, Saturday, 5:15-6 p.m.

Formed in 2013, Smallpools is young, but talented. Their single “Dreaming” topped charts and led to the release of their self-titled EP album. All of their recent success has come quickly, and they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

KONGOS, Sunday, 12:15-1 p.m.

Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, the band consists of Dylan, Daniel, Jesse and Johnny Kongos, four brothers who take alternative rock to the next level. While the majority of their success has been in South Africa, they are starting to receive airplay in the Unites States.

NONONO, Sunday, 2:15-3 p.m.

This Swedish trio, formed in 2012, released their first album last March and has been garnering recognition in the U.S. and Europe. Their genre lies somewhere between alternative rock and indie pop, but one thing is certain: The songs they play are catchy.

RAC, Sunday, 3:30-4:15 p.m.

RAC (Remix Artists Collective) does more than just remix songs. The international members take songs beyond their original mix and add a hip-hop feel with killer melodic hooks. You’ll like their take on songs by Kings of Leon, Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party and more.

The Airborne Toxic Event, Sunday, 6-6:45 p.m.

Formed in 2006, they are known for their combination of rock and orchestral music. The band shares a similar sound with indie favorites The National, Young the Giant and Band of Horses.

Bronze Radio Return, Sunday, 6:50-7:30 p.m.

This revival rock group was formed on the East Coast and has been playing together since 2007. The six members are heavily influenced by the music they listened to when they were growing up, and they pay it forward in their songs.

Don’t forget about Lolla Cashless, the new system that enables you to purchase food and drinks with your wristband (which you have to wear anyway) so you can leave your credit cards and cash at home. Simply visit the Lollapalooza website to register your wristband with a credit or debit card and you’re all set! You don’t have to worry about losing your wristband at the concert, because a pin number is required to make purchases. Take the time to set up your wristband—you won’t regret it.
