Goodman Theatre Scenemakers Board raised more than $50,000 at its fifth annual Scene Soirée fundraising event on July 29. More than 200 people attended the event, which was held at Ovation. Proceeds from the event benefited PlayBuild Youth Intensive, a free seven-week theater summer program for students at the Goodman.

Performers included YouTube beat boxer Yuri Lane, abstract expressionist performance artist Elliott From and the Goodman Youth Poetry Ensemble. Guests enjoyed samplings of local craft bear and Chicago-inspired foods while participating in an auction, which featured items and experiences that showcased some of the most unique areas of Chicago. An original piece painted by From during the event went for $1,900 to Deborah and Jason Knupp, the Scenemakers Board Vice President.

Since its creation in 2007, PlayBuild has fostered critical thinking, literacy and storytelling skills in its students. More than 700 students have participated in the program. The majority of participants attend public schools, with 51 percent enrolled in Chicago Public Schools.
Special Events Committee Co-Chairs Elizabeth M. Balthrop, Heather M. Grove and Megan McCarthy Hayes led the event. Presenting Sponsors included Caliber Advisors and Kobrand Wine and Spirits. Premiere Event Partners were Ovation and Paramount Events. Premiere Sponsors were Clifford Law Offices, Katz & Stefani, Marquette Associates and Robert W. Baird & Co. Incorporated.
