The organization: A survey conducted by the YWCA Lake County found that not only do girls feel disconnected from positions of technology, math and science, but they also see such careers as isolating and unpopular. TechGYRLS seeks to change that thinking.

YWCA TechGYRLS is an eight-week youth empowerment program designed to raise girls’ interest, confidence and self-efficacy in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program helps young girls develop familiarity with technological tools, critical thinking and problem-solving skills for use in any future profession. Offering students a safe, supportive, girls-only environment for exploration and learning, TechGYRLS cultivates leaders in young women.

TechGYRLS works to reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Studies show that girls tend to fall behind boys in these areas from middle school into high school, and the program intends to increase exposure to and interest in technology for girls. The curriculum, comprised of design, animation, programming and robotics, benefits girls ages 9 to 14. The TechGYRLS program also prepares for and participates in the annual FIRST LEGO League robotics competition, hosts spring break and summer camps and facilitates job shadowing in scientific fields.
