Make It Better Readers Help to End Hunger

During the last two weeks of July, we hosted a subscription drive asking new subscribers to our email newsletter to choose one of five outstanding food-related nonprofits as the recipient of a $5 donation when signing up.

The five participating nonprofits—Common Threads, The Kitchen Community, Pilot Light, Purple Asparagus and Top Box Foods—all benefited thanks to your efforts!

Top Box Foods earned an additional $2,500 for being the organization chosen by the most new subscribers.

Top Box Foods delivers affordable boxes of fresh produce and healthy proteins to customers in Chicagoland’s underserved neighborhoods. Founded by Sheila and Chris Kennedy, Top Box Foods offers residents of food deserts a convenient way to buy healthy food far below retail prices by purchasing wholesale, keeping overhead low, and relying on volunteers to help facilitate food deliveries. They have provided over 43,100 boxes of healthy food since May 2012 and have donated nearly $36,000 (5 percent) of food-box sales back to community partners.

Top Box Foods reported to us that a $5 donation could help them provide up to 13 pounds of produce, so thanks to your efforts, Top Box will be able to deliver thousands of pounds of produce to local families in need.
