9 Movies and TV Shows to Watch Ahead of Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards

This Sunday, we have another reason to get dressed up with nowhere to go — it’s the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, a night where Hollywood celebrates the best of movies, television and streaming. And this year, our two favorite co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to emcee the live virtual event. See the full list of nominations (and snubs) here.

Typically in my household, we spend the days before the ceremony catching up on all the things we were too busy to watch. But, of course, 2020 was very different. Whether you have seen it all, or missed a few streaming shows here and there, below is our list of nine of the buzziest nominated shows and movies that you can watch now.

Catch the ceremony live on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. CST on NBC.

“Mank”
Stream on Netflix

Leading the show with six nominations, “Mank” is a film set in 1930’s Hollywood, where alcoholic screenwriter and social critic Herman J. Mankiewicz is finishing the screenplay to “Citizen Kane.” Starring Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried and directed by David Fincher, it is no surprise that “Mank” is being celebrated this award season.

“Ramy”
Stream on Hulu

Ramy Youssef took home last year’s award for Best Television Actor — Musical/Comedy Series, and he is nominated again. A normalized portrayal of Muslim Americans on TV? It’s a must see. Youssef appears as a fictionalized version of himself in this comedy, strifing between his loyalty to religion and loyalty to sex, drugs and Western pop culture.

Palm Springs
Stream on Hulu

If you like a little edgy sci-fi mixed with your rom-com, you’ll love Hulu’s “Palm Springs.” Starring Andy Sandberg, the film received nominations for Best Picture – Musical/Comedy and Best Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

“The Mandalorian”
Stream on Disney+

With several nominations, including Best Television Series – Drama, the original live-action “Star Wars” series is a hit. Dubbed a “space western,” “The Mandalorian” is set just after the events of “The Return of the Jedi” and stars Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, with quite a few other Hollywood heavy hitters.

“Emily in Paris”
Stream on Netflix

Love it or hate it, somehow Emily made it to the Golden Globes this year (without controversy, of course). The series stars Lily Collins, who is nominated for Best Television Actress – Musical/Comedy Series, as a Chicago marketing star who is sent to Paris in a merger. If you want to see what the fuss is all about, dive into this Darren Star series knowing it is not suppose to be taken seriously, and just sit back and enjoy the Parisian views.

“Promising Young Woman”
On Demand Now

A dark comedy thriller, this film stars Carey Mulligan as a traumatized young woman who is a on a mission for vengeance. With four nominations, including Best Picture Drama and Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama, “Promising Young Woman” was directed by “Killing Eve” showrunner Emerald Fennell.

“Schitt’s Creek”
Stream on Netflix

If you are one of the few people on the planet to not watch “Schitt’s Creek” yet, what are you doing?! After losing all their wealth, the Rose family gets dumped in a town called Schitt’s Creek. Featuring a reasonable (maybe?) father, an eccentric ex-star of a mother and two grown, spoiled children, the show celebrated its sixth and final season with seven Emmy wins last year, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and we expect them to take a few more awards back to Canada Sunday evening as well.

“The Crown”
Stream on Netflix

“The Crown” often sweeps awards season, and this year will be no exception. With the main leads all nominated, including Helena Bonham Carter, Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and newcomer Emma Corrin, the drama about the Royal Family has much to celebrate. The fourth season, set mostly in the 1980s, focused on a young Princess Diana and Prince Charles and is a must watch before Sunday.

“Ozark”
Stream on Netflix

If dark and unsettling series are your thing, you need to be watching “Ozark.” Like “Breaking Bad,” “Ozark” explores how far a man will go to protect his family. The series stars Jason Bateman, in a surprisingly dark and humorless role, who is nominated for a third time for Best Television Actor – Drama Series. His leading ladies, Laura Linney and Julia Garner are nominated as well.
