Cycling is a great form of exercise that almost everyone can take part in regardless of their medical history. It can be done on a variety roads as well as both paved and off-road trails.
If you are interested in taking to the roads, here are some key points to keep in mind:
Ride with traffic on the right side of the road. Obey all traffic control devices, both stop signs and traffic lights.
Stay to the right side of the lane, but assert your position in the lane. Maintain a straight path and ride predictably; avoid sudden changes in direction or speed.
Signal turns by pointing in the direction you plan to turn. An open palm facing rearward is a recognized signal that you are slowing or stopping. (Be sure to return your hands to the handlebars in time to safely turn or stop the bike).
Avoid roads with heavy or high-speed traffic, especially at times of the day when they are more likely to be congested.
