Wilmette Native Sam Hine Celebrates Girlfriend Ella Emhoff’s Harper’s Bazaar ‘Fashion Icon’ Status During New York Fashion Week

Ella Emhoff, model, slow-fashion supporter and knit-wear designer, said that being named a ‘Fashion Icon‘ by Harpers Bazaar during New York Fashion Week was “kind of shocking.” Her boyfriend of a year, Winnetka native Sam Hine, was there to support her as a “voice of a generation.”

Hine told People Magazine, “She does herself and that’s the message. She is a true individual. And that’s the most important. That’s what being an icon really is.”

Harper’s Bazaar 2022 Icons honor a rising generation of stars, age 30 and under, who are making an impact on the world through their ideas and art. Emhoff, 23, stepdaughter to Vice President Kamala Harris, first captured attention as the breakout fashion star of the 2021 Inauguration, wearing Miu Miu and Batsheva. She signed with IMG models shortly after.

Other 2022 Icons include Florence Pugh, Amanda Gorman and Jack Harlow.

Hine, GQ’s Fashion Writer, is a style icon himself. He’s interviewed A$AP Rocky, Formula 1’s Daniel Ricciardo, and recently reported on how England’s new King Charles III is already a menswear “king.” He moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion, interning with Antonio Ciongoli and then serving as the creative director of Eidos. “I got paid in clothes and spent the summer soaking up as much about how the industry works as possible,” he told Grailed.

Growing up in Wilmette, Hine participated in the Children’s Theatre of Winnetka’s Prince and the Pauper with his twin bother Nicholas, who recently graduated from Harvard Law School.

Hine told Blackbird Spyplane that he credits his grandfather Clark, a hobbyist race car driver, with teaching him valuable lessons about life, love and “fittedness” with his hand-me-down vintage race car tees.

His mother, Laura Hine, is a writer and editor who contributes to Better.
