Don’t let fitness myths keep you from achieving your goals. We’ve debunked 5 false “facts” below.
1. I only need 15-20 minutes of cardio vascular exercise to lose weight – FALSE. It takes 12 minutes to tap into fat as the primary source of energy. Therefore, a 20 minute cardio workout will only give 8 minutes of fat burning…stay on that elliptical machine a little longer!
2. I don’t need weights if I do cardio – FALSE. It’s a two component system. Cardio can burn fat, but it is weight training that increases muscle size and strength…to get tone!
3. The more Exercise, the Better – False. There comes a point where exercise can become counter-productive and harmful. Everything in moderation!
4. Body Mass Index is the best measurement of my health – FALSE. This is a calculation that does not incorporate muscle mass. There is a difference between overweight and overfat. Use a body composition analysis machine to get a baseline reading!
5. As a woman, I don’t want to lift weights because I will bulk up – FALSE. Weight lifting for women will get them tone, not bulky. The lack of testosterone prohibits women from increasing the size of the muscle. Don’t be afraid to pick up some dumbbells!
